Commvault Cloud Kubernetes Backup is designed for organizations protecting Kubernetes applications across public cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments. It covers application data, cluster resources, configurations, persistent volumes, container image registries, and selected cluster data. Support includes managed services such as Azure Kubernetes Service, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service, Google Kubernetes Engine, and Oracle Container Engine for Kubernetes, along with Red Hat OpenShift and CNCF-certified Kubernetes distributions. Large enterprises with mixed Kubernetes estates are the clearest fit.

Protection depth is the product’s main strength. It backs up PersistentVolumes and PersistentVolumeClaims through CSI volume snapshots and streaming backups, with both full and incremental options. Application-consistent PersistentVolume snapshots can use pre- and post-execution tasks. Kubernetes API resources, namespaces, Secrets, ConfigMaps, StorageClasses, and Helm applications are also included. Granular restores, policy-based retention, and cross-cluster application recovery support both disaster recovery and migration scenarios.

Operational controls make it suitable for teams managing distributed environments. REST APIs cover Kubernetes clusters, application groups, and backups, while RBAC, SSO, SAML, and encryption address administration and access requirements. The product is paid and does not offer a free plan, so it is better suited to organizations with formal backup governance than to small teams seeking a lightweight entry point. Choose it when Kubernetes protection must span multiple distributions and environments; consider a narrower alternative when the requirement is limited to simple backup for a single cluster.

Commvault Cloud Kubernetes Backup pros and cons

    • Enables cross-cluster restore, migration, APIs, RBAC, SSO, and encryption
  • Where it doesn't
    • Designed for paid deployments rather than a free plan
    • The published offer centers on one named Kubernetes Backup plan
    • Its broad Kubernetes scope may exceed smaller, single-cluster needs
