Our verdict on Comical
Comical is an open-source desktop reader for scanned comics and graphic novels stored in RAR (.cbr) or ZIP (.cbz) archives. It suits readers who keep comics as local files and want control over page presentation rather than a broader catalog or library-management system. The reader accepts JPG, GIF, PNG, and TIFF images, making it suitable for archives containing common scanned-image formats.
Its main strength is the range of viewing controls. Readers can choose single-page or double-page display, with fit, fit-to-width, fit-to-height, original, and custom zoom modes. Comical can detect facing pages scanned as one image, rotate pages, enter full-screen mode, and switch between left-to-right and right-to-left browsing. It also supports encrypted RAR archives and ZIP archives using pkzip 2.04g encryption, which adds compatibility for protected files without changing the reader's archive-based focus.
Comical is available as open-source desktop software, and its README lists wxWidgets and GCC as source-build requirements. The same README describes the project as cross-platform while identifying no specific operating systems, and its copyright notice is dated 2003–2011. That history makes Comical most appropriate for readers comfortable with a focused, archive-first tool and local desktop workflows. Readers who need cloud synchronization, panel-by-panel navigation, mobile deployment, or substantial library organization should choose a product built around those capabilities instead.
