Our verdict on CoMaps

CoMaps is a free, open-source mapping and navigation app for travelers, drivers, hikers, and cyclists who want to plan routes and search places without an internet connection. It runs on iOS, Android, macOS, and Linux, covering mobile and desktop use. Its maps draw on OpenStreetMap data, and the project is community-developed. For people who want offline navigation across several device types without a paid plan, the combination of downloadable maps, place search, and turn-by-turn guidance is its central appeal.

The outdoor tools give CoMaps a wider use than basic road navigation. An outdoor map mode highlights trails, campsites, and water sources, while contour lines support terrain planning. Offline Wikipedia articles add reference material during a trip. The app also supports saving favorites and tracks. Navigation announcements are available by voice, and routes cover walking, cycling, and driving. Taken together, those features suit people moving between road travel and outdoor activities, especially when they need maps and place search to remain available offline.

CoMaps also includes a public transport layer for subway and light rail in supported cities, plus a built-in OpenStreetMap editor and support for OSM Notes.
