collectd review
A focused self-hosted collector for plugin-based system and application metrics.

collectd is an open-source, self-hosted daemon for developers, operators, and infrastructure teams that need periodic system and application performance metrics. It runs on Windows and Linux and can collect from operating systems, applications, log files, and external devices. Its plugin-based design covers collection, storage, transmission, threshold checking, notifications, filtering, and processing. This makes it a fit for private servers, embedded systems, and larger metric workloads where teams want to control the collection layer themselves.
Its strongest distinction is architectural flexibility. Input plugins gather metrics, while output plugins can store or transmit them through RRD, CSV, HTTP, Prometheus, OpenTSDB, databases, and messaging systems. Teams can also define custom metric types through types.db files, apply processing through chains, and expose a Prometheus scraping endpoint. That breadth supports different metric pipelines without changing the core daemon, although the product remains centered on collection and transport rather than a complete monitoring workspace.
collectd is a practical choice when a self-hosted, plugin-based collector is the main requirement. Threshold checking and notification plugins add basic alerting-related controls, while filtering and processing help shape data before storage or transmission. The trade-off is scope: it does not present the broader monitoring platform features that teams may expect from an end-to-end service. Choose collectd for foundational metric collection across Windows or Linux, especially when custom metrics and multiple output paths matter. Choose an alternative when you need a hosted service or a wider monitoring experience beyond the collector itself.
collectd pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Collects metrics from systems, applications, logs, and external devices
- Plugin architecture supports inputs, outputs, filtering, and processing
- Includes thresholds, notifications, custom metric types, and Prometheus output
- Where it doesn't
- Requires self-hosting rather than providing a hosted monitoring service
- Offers collection foundations instead of broader monitoring platform features
- Integration breadth depends on the available input and output plugins
