Our verdict on Coherent PDF

Coherent PDF is a toolkit for processing documents through command-line tools and programming-language APIs, aimed at developers and organizations that need scripted PDF work. It covers merging and splitting, page scaling, rotation, cropping and page boxes, encryption and decryption, compression, bookmarks, annotations, metadata, attachments, and image handling. It can also create PDFs from text files or images and add watermarks, stamps, page numbers, and Bates numbers. The command-line tools are listed for Windows, macOS, and Linux; deployment is self-hosted. Its focus is document processing rather than an interactive PDF editor, making it a better fit for repeatable workflows than for users who want to edit PDFs manually or sign them electronically.

The licensing choice is central. Cpdf can be used at no cost under the AGPL, subject to that license’s terms. For commercial command-line use, the vendor lists a perpetual one-license option at $599, or $689 with one year of support and upgrades, and $779 with three years. The CPDFLIB API and Command Line Tools license costs $899 per license, rising to $1,069 with one year of support and upgrades or $1,249 with three years. Those API packages list access for C, C++, Python, .NET, Java, and JavaScript. These are one-time license prices, not monthly per-user subscriptions; multi-license, site, developer, and cloud-use pricing requires contacting the vendor.

The feature breadth is useful when a workflow needs more than page rearrangement: encryption, lossless file-size reduction, annotations, metadata, attachments, and batch processing are all relevant to automated document pipelines. Email and documentation are listed support channels, while support and upgrades are explicit additions to some paid packages. Choose Coherent PDF if command-line or API-driven processing and control over deployment matter, and if the AGPL or per-license commercial terms suit the project. A user seeking OCR, electronic signatures, or a general-purpose visual PDF editor should look elsewhere.
