CodePen is a browser-based social development environment for writing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related preprocessors while viewing live results. It is designed for developers, designers, educators, teams, and anyone creating frontend prototypes, demos, portfolios, or bug reproductions. Pens can be created, previewed, shared, embedded, forked, and commented on through the web platform, with API access also available.

The freemium structure gives users a Free plan with unlimited public Pens and 3 files per Pen. Paid tiers expand the workspace with privacy controls, higher file limits, asset hosting, collaborator invitations, and no ads. Starter allows 50 files per Pen, 2 GB of asset hosting, and 5 collaborators; Developer increases those limits to 150 files, 25 GB, and 10 collaborators; Super provides 300 files, 50 GB, and 15 collaborators. This makes the tier structure relevant for users who need private work, hosted assets, or larger collaborative projects.

CodePen’s main strength is the combination of live frontend editing and public presentation. Real-time collaborative editing supports shared work, while deployment, custom domains, versioning, embeds, and Collections extend Pens beyond isolated experiments. The product is a strong choice for frontend demos, teaching, visual portfolios, and shareable reproductions. It is less suitable for projects that require a broader runtime than its frontend focus, or for users who need private projects and larger file or asset limits without moving beyond the Free plan.

CodePen pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Live HTML, CSS, and JavaScript results in the browser
    • Public sharing, embeds, forks, comments, and Collections
    • Collaboration, asset hosting, deployment, and custom domains
  • Where it doesn't
    • The core runtime focus is limited to frontend technologies
    • Free Pens are public and limited to 3 files per Pen
    • Advanced privacy, storage, and collaboration require paid plans
