CockroachDB Cloud review
A managed PostgreSQL-compatible database for multi-region and enterprise workloads.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
CockroachDB Cloud is a fully managed distributed SQL database service for teams running applications across cloud regions and providers. It supports PostgreSQL-compatible SQL and ACID transactions, with deployments available on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. The service is operated through a web console and can also be automated with Terraform and Cloud APIs. It fits development, testing, and enterprise-critical production workloads that need relational data with high availability, scaling, backups, and disaster recovery.
Pricing is usage-based and billed monthly by vCPU-hour. The Standard plan starts at $0.057 per vCPU-hour and includes shared infrastructure, usage-based storage, single- or multi-region deployment on AWS and GCP, a 99.99% availability SLA, row-level security, column-level encryption, and private connectivity. Mission Critical starts at $0.162 per vCPU-hour and adds dedicated infrastructure, provisioned storage, deployment on AWS, GCP, and Azure, egress controls, CMEK, PCI DSS and HIPAA compliance, and a 99.999% availability SLA with multi-region. A 30-day trial provides an evaluation period, but there is no free plan, and rates vary by provider and region.
Its main advantage is the combination of PostgreSQL compatibility with distributed operation: automatic horizontal scaling and rebalancing, single- and multi-region deployment, managed backups, and disaster recovery address applications that cannot remain tied to one location. Terraform, Cloud APIs, Kafka integration, change data capture, and physical cluster replication add deployment and data-movement options. Standard suits teams seeking managed distributed SQL with a lower entry price, while Mission Critical is the clearer fit for dedicated infrastructure, stronger availability targets, or compliance requirements. Teams wanting a free database plan or a simpler single-region service may prefer a narrower alternative.
