CNI Plugins review
A free, composable CNI toolkit for low-level Linux and Windows container networking.

CNI Plugins is an open-source collection of reference and example plugins for configuring networking in Linux and Windows containers. Maintained by the containernetworking team, a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project, it is intended for CNI-compatible container runtimes. Its audience is infrastructure teams and platform engineers that need composable networking components rather than a hosted control plane or a packaged user interface.
The collection covers a wide range of low-level networking tasks. Interface-creating plugins include bridge, ipvlan, macvlan, point-to-point, VLAN, host-device, and dummy interfaces. DHCP, host-local, and static plugins handle IP address management, while Windows bridge and overlay plugins extend the collection across both supported platforms. Additional components provide host-to-container port mapping, ingress and egress bandwidth limiting, source-based routing, and firewall rules through iptables or firewalld. CNI plugin execution and chaining protocol support allows these building blocks to be combined into networking workflows.
CNI Plugins fits teams that want direct control over container networking and the flexibility to assemble a stack from focused components. It is less suitable for buyers seeking an integrated product with a hosted management layer, packaged integrations, or built-in network-policy functionality. The collection’s value is its breadth of foundational plugins and its open-source distribution, but adopting it still depends on the surrounding CNI runtime and the way an organization designs its networking configuration. Choose it when composability and low-level control matter most; consider an alternative when centralized management or a broader integrated feature set is the priority.
CNI Plugins pros and cons

- Broad interface, IPAM, routing, bandwidth, and firewall plugin coverage
- Supports Linux and Windows container networking
- Free, open-source binaries with chaining protocol support
- Where it doesn't
- Native network-policy functionality is not verified
- Requires a CNI-compatible container runtime
- Provides components rather than a hosted networking service
