Where it wins
- Generates Visual Studio, Xcode, Ninja, and Make build environments
- Dependency-aware rebuilds, caching, testing, and packaging are integrated
- Runs across Windows, macOS, and Linux with out-of-source builds
Where it doesn't
- Requires project configuration files such as CMakeLists.txt
- Multiple native generators can add toolchain decisions to project setup
- Open-source distribution has no commercial paid-plan tiers
Our verdict on CMake
CMake is an open-source family of tools for managing software compilation across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Developers describe projects with CMake configuration files, commonly CMakeLists.txt, and CMake generates native build environments for Visual Studio, Xcode, Ninja, and Make. That makes it a strong fit for game teams targeting multiple desktop operating systems while preserving access to platform-specific build tools. Its 1998 founding year also points to a long-running project rather than a newly introduced build system.
CMake’s core value is the breadth of its build pipeline. It supports dependency-aware builds and minimal rebuilds, maintains a cache of configured variables and environment details, and allows separate out-of-source build trees. Projects can fetch dependencies and make them available at configure time, which helps organize larger codebases. CTest handles test execution, while CPack creates installers and source packages. Cross-platform installation rules extend the workflow beyond compilation into distribution. These capabilities make CMake more than a generator: it covers configuration, rebuilding, testing, installation, and packaging in one open-source tool family.
CMake is distributed as open-source software with a free plan, rather than as a commercial subscription product. Its main tradeoff is that teams must express their projects through CMake configuration files and then choose an appropriate native generator, adding configuration work before builds run. Teams that want reproducible native builds, multiple build trees, dependency handling, and integrated testing and packaging should consider CMake. It is less suited to teams seeking a hosted build service or a subscription product with commercial paid tiers.
