ClusterLoader2 review
A focused open-source framework for reusable Kubernetes cluster performance tests.

ClusterLoader2 is an open-source framework for load and scalability testing on Kubernetes clusters. It is designed for Kubernetes engineers and platform teams that need to evaluate cluster performance, API responsiveness, scheduling behavior, pod startup, resource usage, and latency. Tests can define desired cluster states, object creation, scaling and deletion phases, throughput, measurements, and SLO-oriented checks. Execution uses kubeconfig and provider selection, with deployed tests running locally against the target cluster.
Its strongest capability is the depth of its reusable test model. YAML and JSON definitions, templated Kubernetes objects, parameterized modules, and environment-variable or file-based overrides help teams represent repeatable workload scenarios without rewriting each test. Measurements cover pod startup, API behavior, scheduling, resources, and latency, giving the framework a broader performance view than a tool focused only on request throughput. Prometheus-based metrics collection, including Prometheus Operator integration, adds an observability path for teams already using that ecosystem.
ClusterLoader2 is available as open-source software under the Apache License 2.0, with no paid tiers described. Its fit is strongest for teams already operating Kubernetes and willing to define test scenarios around cluster state and Kubernetes objects. Support for Google Cloud through GCE or GKE, AWS, and VMware vSphere covers several deployment environments, but the product remains Kubernetes-specific and uses a local execution model. Teams seeking a general-purpose infrastructure testing tool, or a hosted workflow with broader platform coverage, should consider a different category fit.
ClusterLoader2 pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Reusable YAML and JSON scenarios with parameterized test modules
- Measures API, scheduling, pod startup, resources, latency, and throughput
- Supports Prometheus metrics and multiple Kubernetes cluster providers
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on Kubernetes rather than general infrastructure testing
- Local execution requires a Kubernetes cluster and kubeconfig
- Cloud support is limited to GCE/GKE, AWS, and VMware vSphere
