Cloudflare Web3 IPFS Gateway provides read-only HTTP access to IPFS content, letting applications retrieve content without operating their own IPFS node. It is aimed at teams that want managed gateway delivery for CID- or IPNS-addressed content. Content itself must be hosted on an IPFS node or pinning service, so this is not a fit for teams seeking an upload, storage, or pinning product.

Gateway configuration is available through Cloudflare’s dashboard or API, with DNSLink and universal-path options. The hostname is configured as a subdomain of a Cloudflare zone. Cloudflare documents automatic DNS record creation, traffic proxying, and SSL/TLS certificate issuance, alongside caching through its data centers. Universal-path gateways can also block CIDs and IPFS or IPNS paths. These features make the service relevant where gateway administration, retrieval controls, and Cloudflare’s delivery ecosystem are central requirements.

Pricing needs attention before selection: Cloudflare documents gateway availability on Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans with included bandwidth, and also describes Web3 gateways as a paid add-on with usage-based billing. The published model therefore calls for evaluating the relevant plan and expected usage rather than relying on a fixed public price. Choose it for managed, read-only gateway delivery with dashboard or API management; choose a pinning or storage service instead if the goal is to host content rather than serve content already available on IPFS.

Cloudflare Web3 IPFS Gateway pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Retrieve IPFS content by CID or IPNS path over HTTP
    • Manage DNSLink or universal-path gateways by dashboard or API
    • Cloudflare handles DNS, proxying, SSL/TLS, and content caching
  • Where it doesn't
    • Read-only access; it does not pin or store content
    • Gateway hostnames use a subdomain of a Cloudflare zone
    • Pricing is usage-based, with no public fixed price specified
