Cloudflare D1 review
A focused serverless SQL option for apps built on Workers and Pages.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Cloudflare D1 is a managed, serverless relational database for developers building applications with Cloudflare Workers and Pages. It uses SQLite-compatible SQL, with access through Worker bindings or an HTTP API, and is suited to applications that fit Cloudflare’s development environment and can scale across multiple smaller databases. It is less suited to teams seeking a broad database service beyond this focused SQL model.
D1’s platform fit is a central strength: it integrates with Workers, Pages, R2 and Wrangler. The feature set includes a D1 Client API, usage analytics for rows read, rows written and storage, and placement controls through location hints and jurisdiction restrictions. Optional read-only replicas provide global read replication. These capabilities make D1 relevant when an application needs SQL within Cloudflare’s ecosystem, but its narrower focus may not match projects that need a different database model or a less Cloudflare-specific architecture.
According to the published plans, Workers Free includes 5 million rows read per day, 100,000 rows written per day and 5 GB total storage. Workers Paid costs $5 per month and includes 25 billion rows read per month, 50 million rows written per month and 5 GB storage, with overages billed by usage. Workers Paid is a Cloudflare Workers plan, not a standalone D1 subscription; paid D1 usage has a $5 minimum monthly account charge, and additional usage is billed separately. Choose D1 if SQLite-compatible SQL, Cloudflare integration and point-in-time recovery suit your application. Consider an alternative if you need broader database-service capabilities or do not want D1 usage tied to a Workers account plan.
