Our verdict on Clio Accounting
Clio Accounting is cloud-based legal accounting software for small to mid-sized law firms, particularly firms already using Clio Manage. It records firm financial activity, manages trust funds, reconciles trust and operating accounts, matches bank-feed transactions, and produces financial and reconciliation reports. The product also supports accounts receivable, accounts payable, vendor management, operating expenses, and trust and client ledgers. It is offered through paid Clio subscription plans rather than as a separate bookkeeping product.
The plan structure expands beyond core accounting as firms move upward. Starter includes Clio Manage, built-in legal accounting, and trust and operating account reconciliation. Core adds automation and reporting. Signature includes Clio Grow and advanced practice management, while Elite adds client acquisition features alongside Clio Manage and Clio Grow. This makes the product easier to evaluate by business scope: firms focused on accounting can look to the lower tiers, while firms seeking broader practice-management or acquisition capabilities may need a higher plan.
Its strongest ecosystem fit is within Clio. Synchronization with Clio Manage is central to the product, helping firms coordinate financial information with practice-management activity. QuickBooks Online and Xero are also listed integrations, giving firms established accounting connections beyond Clio. The product should suit Clio firms that need trust accounting, reconciliation, and reporting in a connected legal workflow. Firms seeking a standalone general-purpose accounting system, or those that do not use Clio's ecosystem, may find its law-firm and Clio-centered focus less suitable.
