Claude Code is Anthropic's AI-powered coding assistant for software developers working across existing codebases and development environments. It can read and understand entire codebases, edit files across projects, run terminal commands and development tools, and plan multi-step coding tasks. Its workflows cover codebase exploration, onboarding, bug fixing, refactoring, testing, migrations, documentation, and pull requests. Developers can access it through terminal workflows, IDEs, desktop, browser, and mobile surfaces.

The published plans show five pricing options. Free costs $0 per user per month with monthly billing, but Claude Code is not included. Pro includes Claude Code at $17 per user per month with annual billing or $20 per user per month with monthly billing, alongside more usage, Projects, and more Claude models. Max 5x costs $100 per user per month and adds 5x more usage than Pro with higher output limits. Max 20x costs $200 per user per month and adds 20x more usage than Pro with higher output limits. Claude Code is also available through Team, Enterprise, or Anthropic Console accounts.

Its strongest fit is codebase-heavy work that benefits from terminal access, testing workflows, parallel subagents, and connections to external tools, databases, and APIs through MCP. Integrations include GitHub, GitLab, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Cursor, Devin Desktop, Slack, and command-line tools. That breadth suits developers managing tasks across repositories and development systems rather than only asking isolated coding questions. Choose Claude Code for agentic implementation, debugging, refactoring, and pull-request workflows; choose another option if a free coding assistant is required or if higher usage limits do not justify a paid plan.
