Our verdict on ChronoSnap
ChronoSnap is an open-source, self-hosted timelapse manager delivered as a Docker container with a web interface. It is designed for solo users and small teams managing scheduled captures from RTSP or RTSPS streams, HTTP or HTTPS image endpoints, and local USB or Raspberry Pi cameras. Captures can be organized into jobs, compared side by side, tagged, favorited, filtered and retained with storage tracking. Existing images or videos can also be imported for processing.
The workflow covers scheduling, production and export in one system. Capture jobs can use intervals, optional daily time windows and date ranges, while video builds expose resolution, framerate and quality controls. Dynamic text overlays can use job, timestamp and frame variables. Automated builds can send webhook notifications, and finished jobs support GIF downloads with looping or single-play options. ZIP job export provides a way to move job data, while archive import supports existing collections. Because deployment is self-hosted, users control the Docker environment, connected cameras and stored media on their own hardware.
ChronoSnap fits automation-oriented workflows through its REST API, built-in Swagger UI and Home Assistant custom integration for entity-triggered timelapses. Those capabilities make it a practical choice when camera events, external scripts or home-automation entities should start or manage jobs. It is less suited to teams seeking a hosted service, broad third-party integrations or a support model beyond documentation. Choose ChronoSnap when control over infrastructure, source compatibility and programmable workflows matter most; consider another option if managed operations or a wider ecosystem is the priority.
