Ceph is an open-source distributed storage system for organizations that need object, block, and file storage from one cluster. It is deployed as self-hosted infrastructure and uses configurable storage clusters with commodity hardware. The Ceph Object Gateway supports REST interfaces compatible with a large subset of the Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift APIs, making it a fit for infrastructure teams, private-cloud environments, and organizations seeking control over their storage deployment.

Its feature depth is strongest in storage lifecycle and data protection. Object storage includes bucket and object management, versioning, lifecycle expiration, storage-class transitions, and S3 Object Lock with governance and compliance retention modes. Multisite zones and zonegroups support cross-zone object synchronization and disaster recovery. These capabilities give Ceph a broader operational scope than an object-only service, particularly for teams that want object, block, and file interfaces within a unified cluster.

Ceph also fits established cloud and private-cloud ecosystems through Amazon S3-compatible clients, OpenStack Swift-compatible clients, AWS IAM, AWS SNS, AWS STS, and OpenStack Keystone. Its open-source deployment model supports free use, but the tradeoff is responsibility for infrastructure configuration, administration, replication design, and ongoing operations. Organizations that need self-hosted control and multiple storage interfaces should consider Ceph; teams that prefer a hosted service with less infrastructure management should choose a managed object-storage option instead.

Ceph pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • S3 and OpenStack Swift-compatible object storage APIs
    • Versioning, lifecycle controls, and Object Lock retention modes
    • Object, block, and file interfaces from one cluster
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires ongoing operational responsibility
    • Storage clusters require configurable infrastructure and administration
    • Focused on infrastructure teams rather than hosted-storage simplicity
