CDK8s review
A developer-focused way to generate Kubernetes manifests without managing infrastructure state.

CDK8s is an open-source framework for defining Kubernetes applications in TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, or Go. It is aimed at developers and platform teams that want to model Kubernetes resources with reusable constructs, charts, and object-oriented APIs. Applications synthesize into standard Kubernetes YAML manifests, which can then fit workflows involving kubectl or GitOps tools. The framework supports Kubernetes APIs, custom resource definitions, Helm charts, and Helm-compatible output across cloud or on-premises environments.
Its strongest fit is code-based manifest generation with ecosystem compatibility. CDK8s can import Kubernetes API objects, CRDs, and Helm charts as generated constructs, while integrations with kubectl, Flux, Helm, and AWS CDK constructs connect it to familiar Kubernetes and infrastructure workflows. Manifest validation plugins can also run during synthesis, giving teams a way to validate generated output before using it in deployment processes. These capabilities make CDK8s more suitable for teams that value reusable abstractions and general-purpose programming languages over static YAML authoring.
The boundary is important: CDK8s synthesizes manifests rather than applying them or managing infrastructure state. It does not provide drift detection or verified state management, and its import command is not an import-and-track workflow for already deployed resource instances. Teams seeking a code-first way to generate Kubernetes configuration should consider CDK8s; teams that need state tracking, drift management, or resource lifecycle control should choose a more complete infrastructure-as-code tool.
CDK8s pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, and Go
- Synthesizes standard Kubernetes YAML and Helm-compatible output
- Works with reusable constructs, Helm charts, kubectl, and GitOps tools
- Where it doesn't
- Does not apply manifests or manage infrastructure state
- No drift detection or verified state management
- Resource import does not track already deployed instances
