cbbackupmgr is Couchbase’s command-line utility for backing up, managing, and restoring Couchbase Server clusters. It is designed for teams running self-hosted Couchbase Server on Linux, Windows, or macOS that want direct control over backup repositories and restore operations. The utility creates full and incremental backups, restores a single backup or a range of backups, and supports backup and restore for metadata, indexes, views, and users. Key and value filtering during restore adds control when recovering selected data.

Its strongest area is backup and archive management for Couchbase environments. Incremental backups can be merged and deduplicated, while failed backups and restores can resume rather than requiring the operation to start again. Backup archives can use local filesystems, and Enterprise Edition adds cloud backup support through Amazon S3. The published feature set also includes repository management and collection-level restore in the enterprise tier. This makes cbbackupmgr a focused fit for Couchbase administrators who need cluster-level protection and flexible restore handling without adopting a separate SaaS backup product.

The edition structure determines the available depth. Community Edition is available with Couchbase Server Community Edition and supports bucket-level backup and restore, but does not include merge, cloud backup, or collection-level restore. Enterprise Edition is included with Couchbase Server Enterprise Edition and adds full and incremental backups, merge, cloud backup, and collection-level restore support. cbbackupmgr is not a broad database backup platform: it supports Couchbase Server, and arbitrary timestamp point-in-time recovery is not part of the documented restore model. Scheduling is provided by the separate Couchbase Backup Service. Choose it for Couchbase-focused, self-hosted backup operations; teams needing broader database coverage or point-in-time recovery should consider another tool.
