Our verdict on Caseware Working Papers

Caseware Working Papers is a Windows desktop application for managing audit, review and financial reporting engagements. It is designed for accounting and audit firms that need connected engagement files rather than isolated documents. Trial balances, adjustments, lead schedules, financial statements and supporting workpapers can remain linked, while custom and pre-built templates support repeatable file structures. The product also covers consolidation, foreign-currency translation and fund accounting.

Its ecosystem is centered on accounting and office workflows. Firms can import trial-balance and general-ledger data from more than 60 accounting systems, connect with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, Microsoft SQL Server, tax tools and document management systems, and use SmartSync within the Caseware environment. Review features include role-based document review and electronic sign-off. For client collaboration, Caseware Cloud and Caseware Queries/PBC Requests add client information and document requests, although the client portal and evidence-collection capabilities may require a separate license.

The product’s breadth suits firms handling varied assurance and reporting work, especially where prior-year file roll-forward, document reuse, linked workpapers and PDF or batch-PDF export are central to the process. PDF/A export is also supported. Its main constraint is the deployment model: the core application is Windows-focused and desktop-based, so firms seeking a platform-agnostic or primarily browser-based workpaper system should consider alternatives. Choose Caseware Working Papers when accounting-system imports, reusable engagement files and structured review workflows are priorities; look elsewhere if broad platform support is more important than desktop depth.
