Our verdict on Canton Network
Canton Network is a free, open-source blockchain network for institutions and applications that exchange data and value while retaining privacy and control. It links Daml applications across participant nodes and organizations, with contracts defining visibility and authorization. The design fits mid-market and enterprise networks for tokenized assets, payments, trading, custody, clearing, and settlement. Applications can use permissioned or permissionless access, while participant nodes can connect to multiple synchronization domains.
Its standout capability is privacy at the transaction and contract level. Sub-transaction privacy and selective data sharing allow participants to receive only the information authorized for them. Sync domains route messages, order transactions, and confirm commits, supporting both public and private synchronization models. A decentralized sync domain uses Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus; a private sync domain uses centralized sequencing and two-phase commit. Interoperability between Daml applications helps separate organizations coordinate without placing all transaction data in one shared view.
The published model presents Canton as free infrastructure rather than a priced software subscription, with self-hosted and API platforms and hybrid deployment across self-hosted and cloud environments.
