Cantata review
A capable free desktop client for users who already run an MPD server.

Cantata is a free, open-source graphical client for Music Player Daemon (MPD). It is designed for solo users and small teams who manage music through a local or remote MPD server, rather than for listeners seeking a standalone media player. The desktop application supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, and provides a Qt 6 interface for browsing collections, controlling playback, and organizing music.
Its strongest area is library and playback management. Cantata can work with multiple MPD collections, manage queues and playlists, create dynamic playlists, edit tags, organize files, and calculate ReplayGain tags. The feature set also extends beyond locally stored music: users can search and play internet radio, rip and play audio CDs, and manage USB mass-storage and MTP devices. An MPRISv2 D-Bus interface adds integration with compatible Linux desktop controls. These capabilities make Cantata a broad desktop control layer for an MPD-centered music setup.
Cantata also connects with services and directories including Jamendo, Magnatune, SoundCloud, Podcasts, TuneIn, ShoutCast, and Dirble. Its free license and open-source model suit users who prefer a community-oriented desktop music tool, while support is provided through community resources and documentation. The main constraint is architectural: MPD is required for primary operation, so Cantata is not the right choice for someone who wants to install one application and immediately play media without configuring a server. Choose it for a flexible MPD client with library, radio, disc, and device features; choose another player if standalone playback or mobile access is central.
