Our verdict on Calliope
Calliope is a web-based manuscript studio for novelists and other long-form writers. Its free editor combines distraction-free writing with book typography, parts and chapters, statuses, synopses, targets, and reordering. Authors can maintain a Map of characters, places, aliases, attributes, and story facts, then add marginal notes, to-dos, references, and chat threads around the manuscript. Unlimited books, writing statistics, Writing Wrapped, and broad export support make the free editor suitable for solo writers who want structure without committing to an AI subscription.
Its standout feature is continuity assistance rather than prose generation. The optional AI companion can search for information with cited sources, reference the manuscript, detect entities, generate synopses, and check continuity against the manuscript canon. That focus suits authors managing complex casts, settings, and long-form story details. The surrounding ecosystem includes Google Drive, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, MCP, and the Writer API. Subscription plans add MCP and Writer API write access, making them more relevant to writers who want connected-client workflows than to authors who only need the editor.
Pricing separates core writing from AI usage. The Free editor costs nothing and includes unlimited books, structure and goals, story-fact mapping, and DOCX, EPUB, PDF, and Google Docs export. AI is available through a €10 credit pack, a €50 credit pack, or a €100 credit pack, all pay as you go with no auto-renewal. Monthly subscription costs €12 per month, while annual subscription costs €99 per year; both include a €10 monthly Calliope AI allowance and connected-client write access. Calliope is a strong fit for authors who value continuity and research tools, but less suitable for writers seeking offline software or detailed rewrite controls.
