CacheGuard-OS is a Linux-based operating system that turns x86/x64 hardware or virtual machines into network security appliances. It is designed for teams managing gateways that need stateful firewalling, NAT, VPN, web application security, antivirus inspection, URL filtering, proxying, traffic shaping, caching, and related services. It can run as a Gateway or as a Manager for centrally managing multiple CacheGuard gateways, with administration through a CLI and browser-based Web GUI.
The pricing structure is freemium rather than a conventional firewall-management subscription. CacheGuard-OS itself is free indefinitely, while the published paid options cover cloud PAYG services or optional commercial services. CacheGuard Gateway 10 costs $0.03 per appliance per hour and adds Standard Support, URL Blacklists, and Extended Antivirus. Gateway 100 costs $0.04 per appliance per hour, and Gateway 250 costs $0.05 per appliance per hour. BeVyPN up to 20 VPN accesses costs $0.02 per service per hour and includes Basic Support. One-Time Anomaly Handling costs €89, while BeVyPN Embedded Application costs €99.
Its strongest fit is a budget-conscious deployment that needs more than firewall rules alone. IPsec VPN, ModSecurity-based WAF, URL filtering, antivirus services, reverse proxying, load balancing, QoS, multi-WAN, caching, and HTTP compression create a wide gateway feature set. Integrations include OpenSSL, NetFilter, IProute2, StrongSwan, ClamAV, Apache, ModSecurity, and Squid. Choose CacheGuard-OS when open-source deployment, centralized gateway management, and broad network services matter. Teams requiring verified rule analysis, change control, API access, or multi-vendor management should consider an alternative.

- Supports bare-metal, virtualized, cloud, and self-hosted deployments
- Where it doesn't
- No verified rule analysis, change control, or API access
- Paid options are services rather than conventional seat-based plans
- Broad gateway scope may exceed the needs of firewall-only teams
