BURSU Connection Manager is a free remote connection manager for engineers and teams that need to organize varied infrastructure access in one application. It supports SSH, WinRM, RDP, VNC, Apple Remote Desktop, Telnet, Serial, Web, FTP, FTPS, and SFTP connections. The product runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web, giving cross-platform users a single catalog for remote sessions, credentials, and operational notes.

Its strongest differentiator is breadth within the connection-management workflow. An embedded terminal includes split view and broadcast input, while embedded remote desktop sessions cover graphical access. Jump hosts and local, remote, and SOCKS5 tunnels support more involved network paths. The encrypted credential vault supports SSH keys and TOTP, and nested folders, favorites, search, tags, notes, and command snippets help organize recurring work. Session logging to timestamped text files adds an audit-oriented record, while per-folder read, edit, and password-reveal permissions support team sharing.

The product is particularly well suited to teams managing a mixed environment across desktop and mobile devices. Optional BURSUcloud synchronization can keep access organized across devices, and web-based catalog management extends beyond the desktop applications. Its integrations serve that workflow: the catalog can live in local SQLite, on a self-hosted PostgreSQL server shared by a team, or in BURSUcloud; the optional AI assistant uses your own OpenAI, Gemini, Claude or DeepSeek key or a local model through Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp; and connections can be imported from PuTTY, WinSCP, mRemoteNG, Royal TS, Remote Desktop Manager, OpenSSH config, .rdp and .vnc files, with passwords from KeePass, 1Password and Bitwarden. The free edition, its only edition, includes unlimited saved connections, tunnels, users and devices, with fair-use limits on BURSUcloud sync. Users who need protocol coverage, embedded tools, encrypted credentials, and permissions in a free product should consider it. Those who need MCP integration, S3 or WebDAV storage, native Kubernetes support or a simpler connection list may prefer a more focused alternative.

On Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later, its AppleRD connections use Apple's High Performance mode (hardware-decoded H.264/HEVC video with the Mac's audio), and Windows desktops open in BURSU's own BURSUrdp engine on Linux and macOS, with IronRDP on Android and iOS.

BURSU Connection Manager pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports SSH, RDP, VNC, SFTP, WinRM, and other protocols
    • Combines terminals, remote desktops, tunnels, and credential storage
    • Runs across web, desktop, iOS, and Android platforms
    • AppleRD High Performance on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14+: hardware-decoded H.264/HEVC video and the Mac's audio (Intel Macs and older macOS connect without audio)
    • Its own BURSUrdp engine for Windows desktops on Linux and macOS (H.264, audio, clipboard, drive and printer redirection, multi-monitor); Android and iOS use IronRDP
  • Where it doesn't
    • No MCP integration, S3/WebDAV storage or native Kubernetes support, per its own comparison
    • BURSUcloud synchronization is optional rather than central to the product
    • Its extensive feature set may exceed the needs of simple connection lists
