Bref review
An open-source toolkit for deploying PHP applications to AWS Lambda.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Bref is an open-source Composer package and toolkit for deploying PHP applications to AWS Lambda. It provides runtimes for web applications, event-driven functions and console commands, with integrations for Laravel and Symfony. It is aimed at PHP teams building websites, APIs, workers, batch processes or event-driven microservices on Lambda, including teams that want a framework tailored to PHP rather than a general-purpose serverless tool.
Deployment uses `serverless.yml` and the Serverless CLI, while infrastructure can also be managed through Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS SAM, AWS CDK or Pulumi. Docker images support local development and Lambda container image deployments. The optional Bref Cloud service adds deployment, AWS credential management and deployment monitoring. Configurable package exclusions help reduce deployment size. This makes Bref a fit for teams already working within AWS and for Laravel or Symfony projects; it is less suited to teams seeking Kubernetes support or a framework spanning cloud providers.
The core is open source and free. Bref Cloud is optional and may have separate pricing. Rollback is handled by redeploying a previous commit, rather than through a dedicated rollback command, so teams should account for that workflow. Support channels include documentation and community. Choose Bref when PHP runtimes, framework integrations and flexible AWS deployment tooling matter most; consider another approach if you need a non-AWS target or Kubernetes support.

- Integrates with Laravel and Symfony and supports local Docker development
- Deploy through Serverless CLI or several infrastructure tools
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on AWS Lambda rather than multiple cloud targets
- Rollback means redeploying a previous commit
- Bref Cloud may have separate pricing from the open-source core
