Breezy is a free, open-source version control system implemented in Python. It tracks source code and other files, records revision metadata and ancestry, and supports branching and merging. Its distributed model allows local history and offline commits, while centralized workflows can use remote shared repositories. That makes it suitable for software developers and teams working on technical writing, web design, translation, and other file-based projects.

Breezy’s main distinction is its cross-format repository support. Git and Bazaar formats and network protocols are built in, giving teams a path to work with either format. SSH-based remote access supports repositories hosted on remote machines, while shared repositories can reduce duplicated history storage. Integrations include Git, Bazaar, SSH, Launchpad, GitHub, and GitLab. File and directory tracking includes empty directories, and revision snapshots preserve commit metadata and ancestry. Teams that need self-hosted repositories and a mix of distributed and centralized workflows will find this combination relevant.

The trade-off is platform and feature scope. Breezy’s supported desktop platforms are Linux and macOS, and Windows is not supported. Nested-tree support is under development and incomplete, which matters for projects that depend on nested repositories. The product is a better fit for teams that value open-source, self-hosted version control with Git and Bazaar compatibility than for organizations seeking broad desktop coverage or a wider feature set. Choose Breezy when its repository formats, SSH workflow, and offline model match the team’s operating environment; consider an alternative when Windows support or complete nested-repository handling is required.
