Our verdict on BrawlCrate

BrawlCrate is an open-source Wii file editor built for Super Smash Bros. Brawl modding. It gives modders editors and viewers for archives, resource files, models, textures, animations, audio, images, collision data, game data, scripts, and other Wii-era assets. Its supported game formats include PAC, PCS, PAIR, MRG, ARC, SZS, BRRES, DOL, REL, BRSAR, BRSTM, TPL, and U8, alongside other Brawl-specific formats. The result is a specialized workspace for people creating or managing Brawl modifications on Windows.

Its standout strength is the breadth of asset handling within that game. BrawlCrate supports model import and export through MDL0, DAE, PMD, and OBJ, while texture workflows include PNG, TGA, TIF, BMP, JPG, GIF, TEX0, and TPL. It also covers palettes, animations, audio, collision data, and game data, with batch extraction, resource-tree Export All, archive repacking, and rebuilding. This makes it suited to projects that move beyond single-file edits and need to work across complete resource structures.

Automation adds another layer through BrawlAPI, an IronPython-based system for extensions and scripted workflows. That can matter for repeatable tasks or custom tooling, while the Windows-only scope keeps the product centered on a specific desktop environment. BrawlCrate is the stronger choice for Super Smash Bros. Brawl modders who need extensive format coverage and archive operations. It is less suitable for users targeting other games, other operating systems, or a general-purpose asset extractor outside the Brawl ecosystem.
