BoxBilling review
An open-source billing stack for metered, subscription, and hybrid products.

BoxBilling is an API-first billing platform for AI products and usage-based software companies. It supports usage metering for tokens, inference calls, GPU-hours, and custom billable events alongside subscription and hybrid billing. Teams can manage invoices, payments, wallets, prepaid balances, subscriptions, customer accounts, and overdue-payment workflows. Its open-source and self-hostable approach makes it relevant for teams that want control over their billing infrastructure rather than a narrow hosted checkout tool.
The published Custom plan includes unlimited events and invoices, unlimited customers, usage, subscription, and hybrid billing, real-time metering, and bxb Elements UI components. It also includes managed hosting in the EU, US, or on dedicated infrastructure. Pricing is custom, and there is no free plan. The plan covers a wide operational surface: automated invoice generation, sending, reconciliation, credit notes, payment processing through multiple providers, lifecycle controls, wallets, top-ups, and automatic credit application.
BoxBilling fits products that need billing logic embedded into a customer experience. Its customer portal covers invoices, payments, subscriptions, and usage, while embeddable web components include React and Vue wrappers. Integrations include Stripe, Adyen, GoCardless, UCP, NetSuite, Xero, HubSpot, Salesforce, Anrok, and Avalara. Teams wanting metering, flexible billing models, and self-hosting should consider it; companies needing only straightforward recurring subscriptions may prefer a simpler billing product.
