Bor review
Open-source policy enforcement for Linux desktops, with compliance reporting and tamper protection.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Bor is an open-source system for managing configuration policies across Linux desktops and laptops. Administrators define policies in a web interface, assign them to machine groups, and deploy an agent to each desktop. It is aimed at teams that need centralized Linux policy enforcement, from small organizations to enterprise environments, without relying on a proprietary core product.
Its policy scope covers browsers, mail clients, desktop environments, system access controls, firewalld, packages, and Flatpak applications. Agents receive policy updates in real time over persistent gRPC/mTLS connections, report compliance by machine and policy, and restore managed files changed locally. The web console also provides machine-group management and an audit log for policy, authentication, and enforcement events. That makes Bor more focused on configuration control and policy compliance than on broad endpoint operations.
Deployment can be cloud-based or self-hosted, while the public project is open source. Directory and identity options include LDAP and Active Directory integration, Kerberos enrollment, and role-based access control. The tradeoff is its Linux-only scope: endpoint inventory, patch management, third-party patching, and remote support are outside the product’s listed capabilities. Bor may suit Linux teams prioritizing policy delivery, compliance reporting, and tamper protection; organizations seeking cross-platform management or those operational functions should consider a broader desktop management product. Vute Tech offers a separate commercial edition, distinct from the public open-source project.
Bor pros and cons

- Tamper protection restores managed files changed locally.
- LDAP, Active Directory, Kerberos, and role-based access control.
- Where it doesn't
- Supports Linux only.
- Does not include endpoint inventory or patch management.
- No remote support capability.
