Our verdict on Blot

Blot is an open-source publishing platform that turns files and folders into websites. It is aimed at individuals and small teams creating blogs, portfolios, galleries, documentation sites, and other personal or creative websites. Posts and pages can come from Markdown, Word documents, Google Docs, images, HTML, bookmarks, and Org Mode, with publishing managed by adding, editing, or removing files in a synced folder. Blot supports web use and self-hosting under the AGPL license.

Its strongest fit is its broad connection to existing writing, storage, analytics, and automation workflows. The integration list includes Microsoft Word, Google Docs, iA Writer, Obsidian, The Archive, Tot, Clicky, Fathom, Google Analytics, Heap, Plausible, Simple Analytics, IFTTT, Shortcuts, and Zapier. Import tools cover WordPress, Squarespace, and Are.na. For site management, Blot adds custom domains and SSL, editable HTML, CSS, and JavaScript templates, customizable URL formats, redirects, optional external comments integrations, analytics integrations, and future post scheduling through metadata dates.

According to the vendor’s pricing page, the paid Blot plan costs $6 per site per month and includes hosting and CDN, all templates, a custom domain and SSL, and support. The published plan information also states that annual billing is available after signup. With no free plan, Blot is better suited to readers who already value a file-based workflow and want one site with broad integration options. It may be less suitable for someone seeking a free starting tier or a publishing process centered on a traditional visual editor. Choose Blot for folder-based control, portability, and customization; consider another platform if those priorities are secondary.
