Blazer review
A self-hosted, open-source BI tool for teams that prefer SQL-driven analytics.

Blazer is an open-source business intelligence tool for teams that want to explore connected databases with SQL. It runs as a mountable Rails engine or from a Docker image, making it a natural fit for organizations with an existing Ruby on Rails application and a preference for self-hosted analytics. Its core workflow covers SQL query exploration, automatic chart generation, multi-query dashboards, parameterized and smart variables, and query auditing.
Database compatibility is a central strength. Blazer supports sources including Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift, Apache Spark, ClickHouse, Elasticsearch, Google BigQuery, MySQL and MariaDB, Neo4j, Cassandra, Druid, InfluxDB, and other listed systems. Teams can also upload CSV files into database tables, work across multiple database sources, and build cohorts, anomaly detection, and forecasting views. For ongoing data oversight, data-quality checks can send email alerts or Slack notifications, giving the platform a broader operational scope than a query-and-chart interface alone.
The trade-off is a focused, developer-oriented product rather than a full enterprise BI suite. Self-hosting places deployment and administration within the team’s environment, and the published capabilities do not include AI or natural-language analytics, governance, scheduling, or embedding. Blazer suits SQL-comfortable teams that value control, Rails integration, and an MIT-licensed open-source model. Organizations seeking managed delivery, embedded analytics, or guided analytics for non-SQL users should choose a product built around those needs instead.
