BinaryCanary is a hosted uptime-monitoring service for websites, servers, email systems, databases, web applications and custom devices. It runs checks from multiple monitoring locations and supports website, URL and IP monitoring, page-content checks, SSL certificate-expiry monitoring, DNS, ping, FTP, Telnet, SMTP, IMAP, POP3 and round-trip email monitoring. With web and API access, it is aimed at teams that need low-cost monitoring for varied technical targets rather than a narrow website-only checker.

Pricing is straightforward across four monthly plans. According to the vendor's pricing page, Starter costs $2 per month and includes 3 monitor locations and 10 SMS on signup. Standard costs $5 per month with 10 monitor locations and 20 SMS on signup; Power costs $10 per month with 30 monitor locations and 30 SMS on signup; Hyper costs $20 per month with 100 monitor locations and 100 SMS on signup. The published plans show a 14-day free trial, but no free plan. The tier structure gives buyers a clear path to more monitoring locations and signup SMS as coverage needs grow.

Its strongest fit is operational breadth at a low entry price. BinaryCanary can verify a failure from another monitoring node before alerting, apply escalation profiles and notification retries, and send alerts by SMS, SMS by email, email or phone call. Maintenance schedules, do-not-disturb periods, dashboards, reports and public uptime reports add useful operational controls. The tradeoff is ecosystem reach: no verified integrations are listed beyond the built-in notification channels. Buyers needing basic protocol coverage, one-minute checks and inexpensive monthly plans should consider BinaryCanary; teams prioritizing a broad integrations ecosystem should look elsewhere.

BinaryCanary pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • One-minute checks across website, server, email and network targets
    • Failure verification, escalation profiles and notification retries
    • Monitoring for SSL, DNS, FTP, Telnet and email protocols
  • Where it doesn't
    • No free plan; access begins with a paid monthly tier
    • No verified integrations beyond built-in notification channels
    • Lower tiers provide fewer monitoring locations
