BAP (Binary Analysis Platform) review
A flexible, research-oriented framework for hybrid binary analysis and program modeling.

BAP (Binary Analysis Platform) is an open-source framework maintained by Carnegie Mellon University for analyzing binary programs. It is aimed at researchers and advanced analysts who need command-line utilities, libraries, staged analysis passes, and programmable modeling rather than a conventional graphical reverse-engineering suite. Core capabilities include binary disassembly, instruction lifting, control-flow graph reconstruction, and raw loading of machine-code blobs. BAP can also be embedded through OCaml or C interfaces, making it suitable for custom analysis applications.
Its strongest fit is hybrid analysis. BAP provides BIL and BIR intermediate representations, static program analysis passes, microexecution, symbolic execution, and taint analysis. Primus Lisp supports analysis and modeling, while plugin-based extension points allow additional architectures and analysis functionality to be added. The platform supports x86, x86-64, ARM, MIPS, and PowerPC, with broader platform coverage spanning Linux, Android, iOS, macOS, VxWorks, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Windows, MS-DOS, UEFI, and standalone environments. Integrations with IDA Pro, Ghidra, Radare2, and Python support workflows that already include established analysis tools.
BAP is distributed as source code and packages under an open-source model, with a free plan and no conventional commercial tier structure. That makes it a strong choice for teams and individuals prioritizing extensibility, research workflows, and programmatic analysis. It is less suitable for buyers specifically seeking an included decompiler, a commercial hosted service, or a broadly supported desktop deployment model. Analysts working beyond the listed architectures should also be prepared to extend the platform through plugins. Choose BAP when analysis depth and customization matter more than turnkey presentation or a single integrated user interface.
