Bandura is a local-first API testing IDE and CI runner for developers and teams working with gRPC and other API protocols. Its desktop application runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with tests stored as plain-text .aether files and edited through a graph or YAML interface. For gRPC work, it supports unary and server-streaming calls using service descriptions from local Protobuf files or server reflection. Personal and commercial use are covered by the Free plan, which includes the complete desktop app, CLI, and MCP server without an account, paid seat, subscription, or activation key.

The strongest fit is its combination of desktop authoring and headless automation. The CLI can run the same tests in CI and produce JUnit XML and GitHub annotation reports. gRPC requests can include metadata, TLS, deadlines, retries, assertions, and captured values, while offline execution keeps local-file workflows independent of an account. Shared flows extend beyond gRPC to REST, GraphQL, WebSocket, and Server-Sent Events, and imports are available for Postman, OpenAPI, Insomnia, Bruno, HAR, and curl.

Bandura is a practical choice for teams that want one free tool for local gRPC investigation, repeatable test files, and CI reporting across major desktop platforms. Its breadth is useful when a workflow spans several API styles rather than gRPC alone. The main boundary is protocol coverage: client-streaming and bidirectional-streaming gRPC methods are not supported yet. The product is also presented as an early-access release candidate, v1.0.0-rc.9, so teams requiring those streaming patterns or a hosted deployment should consider a different fit.

    • Free desktop app, CLI, MCP server, and offline CI execution
  • Where it doesn't
    • Client-streaming and bidirectional-streaming methods are not supported yet
    • Desktop-focused deployment may not suit teams seeking a hosted service
    • Presented as an early-access release candidate, v1.0.0-rc.9
