BackHub is an open-source command-line utility from Tanq16 that creates local Git mirrors of GitHub repositories. It is aimed at solo users and small teams that want a straightforward copy of repository history rather than a hosted backup service. Its scope is deliberately limited to Git data: branches, tags, and history are mirrored, while issues, pull requests, and wikis are not included.

The operational model is simple but requires a self-hosted environment. A YAML configuration file can list repositories, and GitHub token authentication uses the GH_TOKEN environment variable. BackHub can process multiple repositories concurrently, monitor backup progress, and update existing local mirrors automatically. The project publishes multi-architecture release binaries and source code under the MIT license. These features make it suited to teams comfortable running a CLI and managing their own backup destination; it is not a scheduled hosted service.

Restoration uses the local mirror: users can pull from it or clone it as a new repository. That covers recovery of Git repository content, but not associated GitHub collaboration records. BackHub is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. Choose it when a compact GitHub-only mirror is enough and self-hosting fits your workflow. If you need issue, pull-request, or wiki backup, support for another source platform, or a managed backup service, a broader alternative is a better fit.
