Azure SQL Database review
A low-cost managed SQL Server service with a free offer and Azure-native features.

Azure SQL Database is a cloud-native relational database service built on Microsoft’s SQL Server engine. It is designed for development teams and organizations building or modernizing cloud applications on Azure. The service supports managed single databases and elastic pools, relational and JSON data, T-SQL tooling, security controls, intelligent query processing, and REST API or Azure CLI resource management. Its managed approach covers patching, backups, monitoring, maintenance, and high availability.
The pricing structure makes Azure SQL Database accessible for smaller workloads. The Free offer includes up to 10 databases, 100,000 vCore seconds of serverless compute per database each month, and 32 GB of storage per database each month for the life of the subscription. The Basic plan costs $5 per database per month and includes 5 DTUs, 2 GB of included and maximum storage, 30 maximum concurrent logins, and 1–7 day backup retention. Pricing varies by region, purchasing model, service tier, compute size, storage, and agreement, so the published starting price is not a universal configuration cost.
Azure SQL Database fits most naturally into an Azure-centered application stack. Integrations include Azure Functions, Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI, while elastic pools, Hyperscale storage, named read replicas, failover capabilities, and serverless compute support different application patterns. JSON storage, querying, and transformation are available through T-SQL functions. Choose it when managed SQL Server compatibility, Azure integrations, and low entry pricing matter. Consider another database option when the 30-login Basic limit, free-tier usage caps, or cloud and API focus do not fit the workload.
Azure SQL Database pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Free offer supports up to 10 databases
- Serverless compute, backups, failover, and replicas

- Where it doesn't
- Basic allows 30 maximum concurrent logins
- Free usage is capped at 100,000 vCore seconds monthly
- Cloud and API coverage may not suit broader deployment needs
