Azure Migrate review
A broad Azure migration workspace with free assessment tools and time-limited server migration licensing.

Azure Migrate is Microsoft’s cloud migration service for organizations moving on-premises infrastructure, applications, databases, web apps, and workloads from other public clouds to Azure. It combines workload discovery, readiness assessment, rightsizing, cost estimation, dependency visualization, migration planning, testing, replication, and cutover in an Azure Migrate project. The web and API-based service is suited to teams that need a structured path from inventory through migration rather than a tool focused only on server transfer.
The published plans show a broad free assessment and migration layer. Server assessment and migration tools are available at no additional charge, while database and web app assessment and migration are also listed as free. For servers, the migration license is free for the first 180 days for each machine. After that period, the listed price is $25 per replicated instance per month. Azure storage, storage transactions, and data transfer may still incur charges during replication, so the licensing period does not represent every possible migration cost. This model fits teams that can complete server moves within the included period or want to use the free assessment capabilities before committing.
Its strongest fit is an Azure-centered migration program spanning different workload types. Azure Migrate supports VMware, Hyper-V, physical, and other cloud-hosted machines, with continuous initial and delta replication, test migration workflows, and project tracking across preparation, testing, and completion. Integrations with Azure Site Recovery, Azure Database Migration Service, and Azure Data Box extend the workflow to replication, databases, and offline transfer. Teams seeking Azure destination planning across servers, databases, and web applications should find the scope appropriate; organizations wanting a cloud-neutral migration service or a narrow server-only tool may prefer a more specialized option.
Azure Migrate pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Agentless discovery, readiness checks, rightsizing, and Azure cost estimates
- Dependency visualization, replication, testing, and cutover workflows
- Integrated tools for servers, databases, web apps, and offline data transfer
- Where it doesn't
- Server migration licensing is $25 per instance monthly after 180 days
- Azure storage, transactions, and data transfer can add replication costs
- Some dependency visualization uses agents and may incur separate charges
