Azure Managed Lustre review
A focused Azure service for Linux HPC workloads needing Lustre-compatible shared storage.

Azure Managed Lustre is a managed, pay-as-you-go parallel file system for high-performance computing and AI workloads. It provides Lustre-compatible mounting and POSIX-compliant shared access for Linux clients, with durable SSD storage and selectable throughput density. The service fits Azure teams running HPC, machine learning, or other workloads that need shared parallel file storage rather than general-purpose file sharing.
The published plans are organized by throughput per TiB: 40 MB/s per TiB, 125 MB/s per TiB, 250 MB/s per TiB, and 500 MB/s per TiB. Each tier uses a durable SSD file system type, while the primary distinction is performance density. This structure gives teams a direct way to align provisioned storage with throughput requirements. Azure Managed Lustre has no free plan, so it is suited to workloads with a defined paid-storage requirement and a need to choose capacity and performance deliberately.
Its strongest fit is the Azure ecosystem. Blob Storage supports data import, export, and archiving, while integrations include Azure CycleCloud, Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Machine Learning, and Azure HPC Compute. AKS can connect through the Lustre CSI driver, and Linux client packages offer prebuilt kmod and DKMS installation options. Deployment uses an Azure virtual network with availability-zone placement and can be provisioned through the Azure portal or ARM templates. Choose it for Azure-based Linux HPC and AI pipelines that benefit from Lustre and POSIX semantics. Choose a broader file-storage service instead when mixed client platforms or general collaboration are the priority.
Azure Managed Lustre pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Lustre-compatible POSIX shared storage for Linux clients
- Selectable SSD throughput tiers from 40 to 500 MB/s per TiB
- Blob Storage, AKS, CycleCloud, and Azure compute integrations
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on Linux and Lustre rather than broad file-storage use cases
- Provisioned scaling requires capacity and throughput planning
- No free plan is available
