Azure Firewall Premium review
Premium Azure inspection with TLS filtering, IPS, and centralized management.

Azure Firewall Premium is a managed cloud network security service for protecting Azure Virtual Network resources. It is designed for organizations that need stateful traffic inspection, application and network rules, threat-intelligence filtering, TLS inspection, and signature-based intrusion detection and prevention. The Premium tier suits highly sensitive and regulated workloads, including payment-processing and healthcare environments. It can inspect inbound, outbound, spoke-to-spoke, and hybrid traffic through Azure VPN and ExpressRoute gateways.
Pricing is split across three Premium components. Premium deployment carries a fixed deployment charge, Premium data processing adds a variable traffic-based charge, and Premium capacity unit provides optional prescaling capacity. This structure aligns cost with deployment and traffic patterns, but it requires closer capacity and usage planning than a simple flat subscription. The service connects with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Storage, Azure Event Hubs, Azure Firewall Manager, Azure VPN Gateway, and Azure ExpressRoute. Centralized management, NAT with SNAT and DNAT, and Azure-native logging support larger or distributed deployments.
Its standout depth is inspection of encrypted and web traffic: TLS inspection, full URL-path filtering, advanced web-category filtering, and signature-based IPS extend beyond basic stateful firewalling. The trade-off is platform focus. Azure Firewall Premium is a cloud deployment for Azure environments, and site-to-site VPN termination is provided through Azure VPN Gateway rather than the firewall itself. Organizations already centered on Azure and needing premium inspection should consider it; teams seeking a simpler fixed-cost firewall, direct VPN termination, or broader multi-cloud neutrality should look elsewhere.
