Azure Database for PostgreSQL is a fully managed cloud database service built on the PostgreSQL engine. It is intended for teams running PostgreSQL workloads in Azure that want Microsoft to manage infrastructure, patching, backups, high availability, and scaling. Flexible Server supports configurable compute tiers, separate compute and storage scaling, private networking, point-in-time restore, and read replicas. Applications can connect through standard PostgreSQL tools, while Azure users can also work through the Azure Portal, Azure CLI, ARM templates, Visual Studio Code, and Microsoft Entra ID.

The service fits Azure environments particularly well. Private endpoints use Azure Private Link, authentication can use Microsoft Entra, and built-in PgBouncer provides connection pooling. Its platform features also include same-zone and zone-redundant high availability, automatic failover to a standby replica, and cross-region or cascading read replicas. Automatic backups support configurable retention from 7 through 35 days, with point-in-time restore for recovery needs. Vector search and Azure AI integration extend the service toward workloads that combine PostgreSQL data with AI capabilities.

Pricing is usage-dependent rather than presented as one fixed starting amount: Azure pricing varies by region, currency, agreement, and usage. The product is paid and cloud-only, so it suits organizations already choosing Azure more than teams seeking a self-hosted or on-premises PostgreSQL deployment. It should appeal to buyers who need managed operations, private connectivity, availability controls, replicas, and Azure tooling in one service. Teams prioritizing a perpetual free plan or deployment outside the cloud should consider another PostgreSQL option instead.
