Azure Database for MySQL review
A flexible managed MySQL service for applications built on Azure.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Azure Database for MySQL is a fully managed relational database service based on MySQL Community Edition. It is designed for application developers and organizations running web, mobile, and enterprise workloads on Microsoft Azure. The service handles database infrastructure, maintenance, backups, security updates, monitoring, and configurable compute, storage, IOPS, and backup retention. Flexible Server deployment offers Burstable, General Purpose, and Memory-Optimized compute tiers for different workload requirements.
Its strongest fit is the Azure ecosystem. Azure Database for MySQL integrates with Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure Kubernetes Service, and Microsoft Fabric, giving teams a direct path to connect managed MySQL with application hosting, serverless functions, containerized workloads, and data services. Private access through Azure virtual network integration supports Azure-based network design, while zone-redundant and same-zone high availability options address different availability requirements. Read replicas add scaling options for supported compute tiers.
The published plans include a Free tier with limited resources for testing and development, available for 12 months to first-time users. Burstable uses B-series compute sizes for workloads with flexible compute requirements; General Purpose balances compute and memory with scalable I/O throughput; and Memory-Optimized provides higher memory per vCore for high-concurrency workloads. Automatic backups and point-in-time restore extend up to 35 days. Choose Azure Database for MySQL when managed MySQL, Azure integrations, private networking, and configurable availability matter. It is less suitable for teams seeking a permanent free plan or a deployment model outside the Azure cloud.
