Azure Container Apps review
A flexible Azure service for container apps that need event-based scaling and scale-to-zero.

Azure Container Apps is a managed Azure service for running containerized APIs, microservices, background processing, event-driven jobs, and AI apps. It suits teams that want Azure-hosted containers without managing the underlying platform, from small teams to enterprise organizations. Applications can be deployed from container images, local source code, or GitHub repositories, with GitHub Actions workflow generation available for deployments. Its serverless focus makes it a fit for workloads that should scale with demand and can scale down to zero when idle.
The Consumption plan charges for compute capacity by the second and supports scale-to-zero. Dedicated adds a single-tenancy guarantee and dedicated workload profiles, including specialized hardware options. Pricing varies by region and usage; Microsoft directs buyers to a calculator for account-specific amounts. A free usage allowance is monthly per subscription, rather than an unlimited free service. Teams should compare expected workload patterns and their need for dedicated capacity before choosing a plan.
Deployment and operations are closely tied to Azure: integrations include Azure Container Registry, Azure Files, Service Bus, and Event Hubs, as well as GitHub Actions, Apache Kafka, and Redis. HTTP, TCP, and custom or event-based rules drive horizontal scaling; revisions with traffic splitting support controlled traffic changes. Ingress can use custom domains and TLS certificates, while persistent state can be mounted from Azure Files or handled through separate Azure data services. Choose it when Azure alignment, multiple deployment paths, and scaling controls matter; teams seeking cross-cloud hosting or built-in managed databases should consider another approach.
Azure Container Apps pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Deploy from images, source code, or GitHub repositories.
- Scale automatically on HTTP, TCP, and event-based rules, including to zero.
- Use revisions, traffic splitting, custom domains, and TLS certificates.
- Where it doesn't
- Runs on Azure cloud, so it is not a cross-cloud hosting option.
- Dedicated single-tenancy and workload profiles require the Dedicated plan.
- Persistent storage uses Azure Files or separate Azure data services.
