Our verdict on Azure Boards
Azure Boards is a work-tracking service within Azure DevOps for software teams using Scrum or other agile processes. Product and sprint backlogs, work items, boards, taskboards, and iteration assignment cover the core planning cycle, while discussions and mentions keep collaboration attached to individual work items. It suits small teams already working with Microsoft development tools, as well as larger organizations looking to connect planning with development activity. Teams seeking a dedicated Scrum workflow without adopting the Azure DevOps environment may find it less compelling.
The plan distinction matters for Scrum buyers. Stakeholders is free, but it does not include agile tools such as sprint planning. Basic includes work-item tracking, Kanban boards, backlogs, and sprint planning; the first five users are free, and additional users cost $6 per user per month, billed monthly. Basic + Test Plans costs $52 per user per month and adds test planning, tracking, and execution to Basic. A 30-day free trial is also offered. The free Stakeholder access level is therefore not equivalent to a free Scrum planning setup; small teams can start with the free Basic allowance, while teams needing test management should weigh the higher-tier price.
For teams that value development-tool connections, Azure Boards links work items to GitHub commits, branches, and pull requests, and also integrates with Microsoft Teams, Slack, Excel, Power BI, and the Azure DevOps REST API. Sprint burndown and velocity charts, team dashboards, and Analytics reports provide progress views beyond the board itself. It is available on the web and through self-hosted deployment, with documentation as the listed support channel. Choose it when Microsoft and GitHub connections, backlogs, and sprint reporting are central; look elsewhere if you need agile planning in the free Stakeholder tier or prefer a Scrum tool outside Azure DevOps.
