Azure Application Insights is Microsoft’s application performance monitoring feature within Azure Monitor. It is designed for developers and operations teams investigating live web application health, performance bottlenecks, failures, dependencies, and end-to-end transactions. The service collects metrics, logs, traces, requests, exceptions, dependencies, and browser data, with support for applications hosted in Azure, other clouds, or on-premises environments. Its web focus makes it a natural fit for teams already working with Azure tooling and cloud-hosted application telemetry.

The published Pay-As-You-Go plan applies usage-based Azure Monitor pricing to telemetry ingestion, retention, queries, metrics, alerts, and web tests. That structure can suit teams whose monitoring consumption changes over time, but it requires attention across multiple billable areas rather than a single conventional subscription price. Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Grafana dashboards, and Visual Studio provide the main ecosystem connections. OpenTelemetry ingestion also supports traces, metrics, and logs, while Kusto Query Language enables analysis through Log Analytics.

Its strongest differentiator is the range of investigation and product-usage views in one Azure-oriented service. Teams can move from failure and performance diagnostics to transaction tracing, application maps, automatic or manual dependency tracking, browser telemetry, real-user monitoring, funnels, user flows, and cohorts. That breadth makes it a strong choice for Azure teams that want application health and usage analysis together. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a free entry tier, a simple fixed-price plan, or broad platform and integration coverage outside the Azure ecosystem.

Azure Application Insights pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • End-to-end transaction tracing and dependency mapping
    • OpenTelemetry ingestion with KQL analysis in Log Analytics
    • Browser telemetry, RUM, funnels, cohorts, and user flows
  • Where it doesn't
    • No free plan is available
    • Usage-based billing spans several Azure Monitor charges
    • Platform and integration coverage centers on the Azure ecosystem
