Azure API Center is a cloud service for organizations that need a centralized inventory of APIs across types, lifecycle stages, and deployment locations. It is designed for API program managers, IT administrators, application developers, and API developers. The service tracks versions, definitions, runtime environments, and deployments, while metadata-based organization supports filtering and governance requirements. It also complements Azure API Management for runtime governance, making it most relevant to teams building a structured API program rather than simply listing products for external buyers.

The published plans show a Free tier for evaluation and small-scale use, with limited inventory and governance features. Microsoft’s current overview describes that plan as having no stated time limit, while the API Management pricing page presents the Free plan as a 90-day evaluation plan. Standard is intended for enterprise and production workloads and expands inventory and governance capabilities. It is included at no additional cost when linked to eligible API Management tiers. Teams should therefore review how their API Management setup affects eligibility before choosing the paid-tier path.

Azure API Center’s strongest area is design-time governance and inventory control. Microsoft-managed linting and analysis, custom Spectral rulesets, analysis profiles, OpenAPI and AsyncAPI support, lifecycle controls, role-based access, and breaking-change detection in the Visual Studio Code extension create a broad governance toolkit. Registration is available through the Azure portal, Azure CLI, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD pipelines, with connections to Azure API Management, Apigee API Management, Kong Konnect, and MuleSoft API Management. Choose it for API discovery, standards enforcement, and lifecycle visibility. Choose an alternative if the primary requirement is marketplace monetization, subscriptions, or publishing workflows.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Marketplace monetization and subscription workflows are not covered
