AWS Transfer Family review
A metered AWS service for managed protocols, workflows, access controls, and storage integration.

AWS Transfer Family is a fully managed file-transfer service for moving data into and out of Amazon S3 or Amazon EFS. It supports SFTP, FTPS, FTP, AS2, and browser-based transfers, with use cases including business-to-business exchange, partner collaboration, data distribution, and internal workforce access. Organizations can use managed endpoints instead of managing transfer server infrastructure, while custom identity providers and per-user access controls support controlled access.
Pricing is usage-based rather than organized into fixed plans. According to the published AWS pricing examples for US East (N. Virginia), SFTP, FTPS, or FTP endpoints cost $0.3 per protocol per hour, while data transferred over those protocols costs $0.04 per GB. Web app units cost $0.5 per web app unit per hour and support browser-based transfers to and from Amazon S3, with up to 250 unique sessions per 5-minute period per unit. SFTP connector calls cost $0.001 per call, connector data transfer costs $0.4 per GB, and workflow data processing costs $0.1 per GB. Endpoint, data-transfer, storage, and related AWS service charges are billed separately and can vary by Region.
The service’s strongest fit is an AWS-centered deployment that needs more than basic file hosting. Transfer Family workflows can copy, tag, scan, filter, compress, and encrypt files, while SFTP connectors send and retrieve files from remote SFTP servers. Integrations include AWS IAM Identity Center, Amazon S3 Access Grants, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS Step Functions, AWS B2B Data Interchange, Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, AWS Secrets Manager, AWS CloudTrail, and Amazon CloudWatch. Choose it for deeply integrated, programmable transfer operations across AWS storage and services. A simpler FTP hosting option may suit teams that want fixed-plan pricing or do not need this AWS service ecosystem.
