AWS Lambda runs functions and applications without requiring teams to provision servers. It is aimed at teams building event-driven workloads, HTTP endpoints, and real-time data processing, especially those working with AWS services. The service manages infrastructure, scaling, capacity provisioning, monitoring, and logging. Its range of runtimes and deployment formats supports varied application needs, while durable functions can handle multi-step workflows.

Pricing is usage-based rather than a conventional monthly subscription. The published Pay-as-you-go rate is $0.20 per 1 million requests per month, and the always-free tier includes one million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds each month. Additional charges apply for requests and execution duration; duration is measured in GB-seconds based on allocated memory. Other AWS services may add charges as well, so teams should account for both request volume and runtime when estimating costs. This model suits workloads that vary over time, but is less straightforward to budget than a fixed monthly plan.

AWS Lambda fits naturally with services such as Amazon S3, DynamoDB, Kinesis, Kafka, SQS, API Gateway, CloudWatch, and X-Ray. Functions can be invoked by AWS services or exposed through function URLs and API Gateway HTTP endpoints. It supports managed language runtimes, custom runtimes, ZIP packages, and container images, with versions, aliases, and traffic-shifting deployments for release management. The maximum execution time is 900 seconds, and custom domains are supported through API Gateway rather than directly through function URLs. Choose Lambda for broad serverless workloads and AWS-connected systems; consider another approach if fixed monthly pricing or longer-running execution is central to the project.

AWS Lambda pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Scales automatically from zero to peak demand.
    • Supports managed and custom runtimes, ZIP packages, and container images.
    • Connects with AWS services and supports durable multi-step functions.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Execution duration and other AWS services can add charges.
    • Custom domains require API Gateway rather than Lambda function URLs.
    • Maximum execution time is 900 seconds.
