AWS IAM Identity Center review
A free, AWS-centered IAM service for multi-account SSO and access control.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
AWS IAM Identity Center centralizes workforce access across AWS accounts, AWS-managed applications, and SAML-enabled cloud applications. It is designed for organizations using AWS Organizations to manage multiple accounts and needing browser-based single sign-on, centralized permission sets, and controlled access assignments. Administrators can connect an external identity provider through SAML 2.0 or use the built-in directory, then provision users and groups through SCIM.
The service’s main strength is its fit with the AWS ecosystem. It connects with AWS Organizations, CloudTrail, the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, AWS SDKs, and services including Amazon SageMaker Studio, Amazon Redshift, Amazon QuickSight, AWS IoT SiteWise, and AWS Systems Manager Change Manager. Temporary credentials support CLI and SDK access, while attribute-based access control uses identity attributes and session tags. OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and trusted identity propagation extend access flows across supported applications.
AWS offers IAM Identity Center at no extra charge, making it a practical choice for AWS-first organizations that want centralized access without a separate paid IAM tier. MFA supports FIDO2 authenticators, virtual authenticator apps, and RADIUS MFA. The service also supports lifecycle provisioning and identity federation, but its strongest value remains AWS account governance rather than broad, vendor-neutral application management. Choose it when AWS Organizations is central to your operating model; consider a different IAM focus when adaptive-access policies or a wider non-AWS application strategy are priorities.
AWS IAM Identity Center pros and cons

- Adaptive-access policy features are not part of the documented feature set
- Its strongest capabilities are tied to AWS accounts and services
- Non-AWS application access centers on SAML-enabled cloud applications
