AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry (ADOT) is an AWS-supported distribution of the CNCF OpenTelemetry project. It combines APIs, libraries, auto-instrumentation agents, and a Collector for gathering logs, metrics, and traces. Teams can generate traces without application code changes, enrich telemetry with Kubernetes metadata, process it, and send it to AWS services, partner platforms, or OTLP-compatible backends. It is aimed at AWS-centric teams that want an open-source pipeline spanning cloud, hybrid, and on-premises workloads.

The pipeline covers a broad telemetry workflow. Receivers support OTLP, Prometheus, Jaeger, Zipkin, StatsD, Kafka, and file logs, while exporters include AWS X-Ray, CloudWatch, Prometheus Remote Write, OTLP, Kafka, and partner platforms. Processors handle filtering, batching, sampling, transforming, and modifying telemetry, and routing can send data to one or more observability backends. Integration options include Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, Amazon OpenSearch, Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka, Datadog, Datadog, AppDynamics, Dynatrace, Honeycomb, Lightstep, Logz.io, New Relic, Splunk, and Sumo Logic.

ADOT itself has no usage charge, but telemetry sent to AWS services is billed under separate service pricing. That makes the software attractive for teams seeking a free pipeline, while total operating cost depends on the destinations they choose. Deployment support covers Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, EKS, EC2, Windows, Debian, RPM-based systems, Lambda, Fargate, and App Runner. Choose ADOT when you need open-source collection, processing, and routing across AWS and other environments. Teams seeking a hosted backend or built-in AI features should look elsewhere.
