AWS CDK review
An open-source IaC framework for AWS teams that prefer application languages.

AWS CDK is an open-source infrastructure-as-code framework for developers and platform teams building on Amazon Web Services. It lets teams define resources in TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, C#/.NET, or Go, then synthesizes those definitions into AWS CloudFormation templates. The CDK CLI supports stack deployment and management, while reusable constructs help organize infrastructure definitions. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it a fit for AWS teams that want to express infrastructure in general-purpose programming languages rather than a dedicated configuration language.
Its strongest operational features cover previewing, change visibility, and ongoing control. The cdk diff command compares local infrastructure definitions with deployed stacks, while cdk drift detects configuration differences through AWS CloudFormation. Existing AWS resources can be imported into CDK stacks, and Aspects apply validation, tagging, compliance, and governance rules. CDK Pipelines adds self-updating CI/CD pipelines, with integrations including AWS CodePipeline, AWS CodeCommit, GitHub, and AWS CodeStar. These capabilities make AWS CDK suitable for teams connecting infrastructure definitions with application development and delivery workflows.
According to the published pricing model, AWS CDK itself is open source and has a free plan, with no additional charge for the framework. AWS resources provisioned through it may incur normal AWS service charges. State is handled through AWS CloudFormation rather than a separate CDK-hosted state service. AWS CDK is a strong choice for teams committed to AWS and comfortable with CloudFormation-backed workflows, especially when policy rules, drift detection, imports, and CI/CD matter. Teams needing one infrastructure tool across multiple cloud platforms should choose an alternative with broader cloud coverage.
